Record Store Day has come, and now we are all here to worship at the altar of tangible music (which kinda doesn't make sense). Anyhow, these very important stations--record stores--that we grew up going to and hanging around are going down like Hollywood Videos, so today is a day to go and support these places. A lot of cool bands are releasing limited records and playing at these shops, so it's an easy day to drag yourself out and participate.

This also concludes our 2-part episode that celebrates this "holiday." With open arms Sam and I accepted this little mission to explore the bins of record stores and find some cool stuff that we not only wanted to have in our collections, but that we could play for our listeners. It's a win-win-win-win-etc. situation.

As we mention at the end of this episode, Sam and I are retooling the format and will debuting this May 10, 2010. Consider it the premiere of our 2nd series. Just like Uncle Accordion says, "That's OK, 'cause it's still Two Dudes," but it'll be slightly different.

For now, go buy records:

1) Brave Belt "Waiting There For Me"
2) Dottie West "Lesson in Leavin'"
3) Silver Jews "I'm Getting Back Into You"
4) XTC "A Dictionary of Modern Marriage"
5) Gilberto Gil "Aquele Abraço"
6) Os Mutantes (pictured above) "Jogo De Calcada"
7) Gilberto Gil w/ Os Mutantes "Marginalia II"

Today we give you part 1 of another 2-part show, Record Store Day Celebration. The idea Sam and I had was to go to a record store of our choosing, buy a bunch of stuff, and play some hot picks from our finds. See below? Those are them. Seeing that we do this very thing (go and buy music) quite often, this show was a literal no-brainer to fulfill. (My brain basically goes into cruise control when I step foot into Amoeba. Whatever I recall that I want, it goes in the basket.)

Please go support your local record store. If it's up to us, these musical meccas will never go obsolete. But, if we're being realistic, they will; we're just here to make sure they go later rather than sooner.

Here's what we bought:

Intro) My Morning Jacket "Off the Record"
1) Bad Sports "Last Cigarette"
2) Woody Allen "Introduction to Flick"
3) The Lovin' Spoonful "Pow"
4) Hot Dogs "Feel Real Fine"
5) Squarepusher "Iambic 9 Poetry"
6) Budos Band "Origina of Man"
7) Love "Everlasting First"
8) Ted Leo/Pharmacists "Where Was My Brain"
9) Derek & Clive "Nurse"
10) The Specials "Blank Expression"
Background) Miles Davis Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants

As we mention in this week's broadcast, this episode not only honors party music, but for all aspiring DJs out there, you may copy and paste this as your set. You're welcome. We did it for you. The hard work is done. Sit back and watch people go nuts for your gig. Again, you're welcome.

Sam and I may not be the most happening dudes (in a way, we are, though), but we like to think we'd know how to party if called upon to do so. To test our mettle, we bravely present this program of party and slow jams. There's room for tearing up the carpet,, making out during a slow jam, or blitzing the dance floor. We give you that variety and then some.

Come back when you're done sweating:

Intro) Drag the River "Having a Party"
1) Grandmaster Flash "Freedom"
2) The Marvelous Darlings "I Don't Wanna Go to the Party"
3) Spoon "You Gotta Feel It"
4) A Tribe Called Quest "Can I Kick It?"
5) The Murder City Devils "Boom Swagger Boom"
6) Scientist "The Mummy's Shroud"
7) Bobby & James Purify "I'm Your Puppet"
8) M.I.A. "Boyz"
9) The Specials "Monkey Man"
10) Kanye West "Champion"
11) Northern State "At the Party"
12) Gorillaz "White Flag"
13) Marvin Gaye (pictured above) "Got to Give It Up (Part 1)"

Winter's over. So, like Two Dudes, many of you are shedding your skin and starting anew. This might mean heartbreak for some of you, and, if that were the case, we finally have a show for you. A bunch of songs that sound as sad you are. It's a heartbreaking show. Spring has sprung, though, and now we all can look forward to being born again: a mind cleared up, a heart recharged, a spirit renewed. Sound too optimistic? Listen to the show, then, and live the pain one more time!

Your pain is ours:

Note: When you load the player to listen to this episode, or download it, you may notice the length is a bit longer than our usual shows. There is about 45 minutes extra that never plays at the end, i.e. The show actually ends and the file stops playing where it should, 45 minutes less than what the player will show.

Time to go around the world again. Were you to go back to Episode 9, you'd see we started our musical trek and cleaned up a large handful of countries. This week, we've got another large handful for you. Remember: Our aim is, in time, to play a song from every country out there. Will we do it? We plan to. Does it seem impossible? Yes. But so did invisibility, and now we have cloaking technology. Google it. Wait, no, don't Google it; listen to the show. Then, Google it.

You're now cultured, you're welcome:

Intro) Daft Punk "Around the World"

Today, dropping by are our friends, Brent, Mariana and Rob. We've mentioned them all one time or another on the show, and we hope you enjoy their presence. Up 'til now, we've never had to mic up so many people, so our amateur setup may sound a little rougher than the Two Dudes audience is used to. Next time we have more than 2 in the studio, we'll fix that. (It's back down to 2 next week, in case you're worried.)

I guess we also have a show to introduce. This week we went over some songs that came from bands' final albums/output. It's a break-up show, of sorts, and we've got all the final documents to prove it. It's kind of difficult, because I found myself wanting to play something from the Clash, but then you might remember what a steaming pile Cut the Crap is. So, as usual, we scoured our collections and found stuff that not only brought bands to the brink of their careers, but also worthy final statements for your listening pleasure.

So please enjoy. We had a fun time with our friends. Support the artists.

This is the end:

Intro)
1) Q & Not U (pictured above) "Wonderful People"
2) McLusky "She Will Only Bring You Happiness"
3) Piebald "Getting Mugged and Loving It"

The biggest mistake you've ever made was assuming Two Dudes only know about music. Not true. We also know about art, culture, food, bicycling, professional wrestling, and literature. Well, this show's about literature. To properly explore this subject, we'll go ahead and choose music as our means.

Here we have for you all a show of poetry readings, anti-poetry reading diatribes, songs about literary figures, maybe some bootlegged audio from Salinger's funeral--whatever we can find. Your job is to relax and enjoy. Keep listening, keep reading, and we'll see you next time.

I've read these songs are good:

Intro) The Deep City Band "Masterpiece"
1) Cleveland Bound Death Sentence "Rumble Seats & Running Boards"
2) Elvis Costello & the Attractions "Everyday I Write the Book"

A while ago, we hit you with an episode of artists starting with the letter A. Today, naturally, we do B. See where this is going? That's right, mark your calendars: August 2013...Z! The problem with joking like that is you're not taking into consideration the intensive labor and consideration we give to each letter. Are there better artists than Buzzcocks to do this letter? No. Do both Pixies off-shoots demand representation for B? Yes. Are you really not enjoying hearing Todd Barry and Lenny Bruce on the same show? Didn't think so.

So, Two Dudes...we're providers in the end...purveyors of great taste and generosity...people with plenty of picks--OK, not the P show. (Well, not in the sense that we have colostomy bags under our broadcasting table.) On with the show!

Band bhe bominations bar:

Intro)
1) Jason Boesel "Hand of God"
2) Big Star "Back of a Car"

Though Punxsutawney Phil was about the only groundhog to see his shadow a few weeks back, we're going with the consensus and predicting a short winter (especially since I sweated this afternoon for no reason). With spring on our heels, we welcome many things including our dearly departed friends, Rob and Brent, who're returning from S. Korea this month.

In the spirit of all things returning (for better or worse--I hate hot weather), here're songs about traveling and returning home; we even set up a nice arc for you all. So, if you're yearning for brighter days and reunions ahead, you're going to love this show. If, like I, you hate the sunny months and prefer to be left alone most of the time, tune in next week when we put a mic to the ground...at a cemetery.

There are many places like home:

Our original idea for this week was to cover each other, i.e. do the whole show in character, Sam as me and me as Sam. Weird, huh? We nixed it and decided to just play cover songs. So, this week you get a handful of hits done the second time around (or third, or fourth, etc.). Some are good, some are better, some are worse, some are unrecognizable. The Two Dudes audience being the experts they are should have no trouble picking up all the nods with their undisputed knowledge.

You've been buttered up, now dig the set, dig the artists, and dig yourself.

Intro) The Walkmen "All My Life"
1) The Get Up Kids "Beer For Breakfast"
2) The Animals "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"

As if it weren't obvious already, Two Dudes probably would fit better in a room with a bunch of kids than a room of music critics. Just the way it is. To honor this reality, and to pay homage to the future of this mess, we present to you a show dedicated to kids, with songs for kids, kid-like songs, and stuff that we think kids would dig. Kids kids kids.

With that, onto the show. Support the artists and stuff, and we'll see you next time...or, you'll hear us next time. I guess we'll see your IP address. No one hides. Two Dudes.

R.I.P. JAY REATARD

You know the drill, on "Don't Let Me Down," we press SHUFFLE SONGS on our iPods and let what will play...play. So what happens next? Well, Sam touches down on a handful of greatest hits as mine rages with post-hardcore angst. Trust us, it sounds better in the show than this description. Though Sam thinks these episodes are as revolutionary as pre-programmed radio stations with no DJs, we both hope you'll be entertained as we explain what has come to the surface and why.

OK enough! You be the judges. Support the artists. Thanks for listening.

That's so random:

1) Blink-182 "Man Overboard"
2) Green Day "Stuck With Me"
3) Johnny Cash "Danny Boy"

Before we get started, let us not go on without recognizing the music world's loss of Jay Reatard this week. Jay was an amazing musician with talent to spare. It's hard to express how disappointing this is, as many of you fans know, but we have a handful of great records to spin and memories of him blessing this Earth with music of a quality we're barely worthy of. R.I.P. Jay Reatard. (A full-on Reatard tribute will be paid on next week's episode.)

It goes without saying that there is an international crisis in the form of the fallout of the Haiti earthquake that is a much larger scale loss to many more. We kinda wanted to recognize that, as well, so we don't seem like music-obsessed pricks with no sense of reality/responsibility (though we just may be). But seriously, if you can, find some spare change to donate to these struggling people on the brink of their existence. You know how to find these outlets, and if you're looking for something in return, Propaghandi is supposedly trading you some vintage mp3 b-sides for your donation, or Arcade Fire will be happy if you do too. The real point is to give what you can, even if it's just your ears and attention to the stories coming out of Haiti so that you can combat the Pat Robertsons and Rush Limbaughs of the world and get the story straight.

Are we on? OK! To lighten your emotional load this week, we give you an episode filled with music from our favorite movies. Some are pure soundtrack score, some are perfectly placed pop tracks, and all are cinematically sound. Dig that. So while you're contemplating your global opinions, listen here and we'll get on with this together.

What's that song from that one movie:

Intro) Bill Conti "The Rocky Theme/Gonna Fly Now"
1) The Chips "Rubber Biscuit"
2) Nico "These Days"
3) The Boo Radleys "There She Goes"
4) Pete Wingfield "18 With a Bullet"

20 episodes? Didn't think we could do it? Of course you did. That's why you're still here, as are we.

Usually, Sam and I'll get a vibe through the waves that our audience is nostalgic for simpler times, a more innocent era that takes them back to when the world was smaller and responsibility was a four(teen?)-letter word. Yes, the first time. While your mind is still in the gutter, press play and partake in listening to these songs with us, a larger batch of tunes that come from artists' debut albums. Feels good, eh?

Support the artists. Support the troops. Life support.

Deeply ensconced in 2010, Two Dudes brings your good mood right back down with a song about regrets! If you were thinking we would do a show about resolving to make any changes none of us really ever stick to, forget it: we're just not that type of show. What we are going to do is be real, play some jams that concern themselves with issues that we're not always ready for, and listen how our musical heroes dealt with them. Sound cool?

Welcome to our first two-part show, the Best of 2009. In this episode, we will begin counting down our favorite 20 songs, ten from Dave, ten from Sam. You will be listening to it as it happens. This episode ends about halfway through the bonanza, and it will pick up next week when our Best of 2009 show concludes. (We've spread it out, because we know that 2 hours of Two Dudes can be overwhelming for the weak at heart.)

Now then, we hope you enjoy our trip down recent-memory lane, and that you'd support the artists if you like what you hear. As we barrel toward Christmas/holidays, please remember that the greatest gift one can give is love Two Dudes Radio, punk.

Episode Sixteen: New Finds in '09

"Hey poser, look at you buying that Johnny Cash Greatest Hits in 2009! Don't feel bad, I just saw a guy buy the Pet Sounds boxed set brand new!"

Ever hear this at a record store? Ever just feel the clerk's critical eye searing you like a refined, hipster-blog-trained lazer? OMG here's the show for you: Two Dudes has a full set of music that we just started digging this year, and we've embarrassingly compiled it all here for you today to listen and enjoy. You'll hear Sam admit there's a Van Morrison song he's never heard, David stumble over the country of origin of the Cyrkle, and both music experts basically throw down some serious poser knowledge about bands and songs they're just beginning to wrap their tiny heads around.

So, let's all get embarrassed! Once you're done, support the artists, support the kids, and since we're barreling towards unfettered socialism on the health care tip, support each other.

Episode Fifteen: A

On today's show, we musically look at the letter A. Yet another beginning to one of our many projects, we'll eventually get through the whole alphabet by playing bands or artists that start with the letter A (e.g. Arcade Fire, Fiona Apple, et al.).

By doing so, it also gave us a perfect reason to interview a great band from Gainesville, Florida called Anchor Arms. We talked to James, now playing guitar while singing, about their new album, Morning Pistol, set to come out mid-2010, what it's like to be grouped in such a popular and influential region, a couple of upcoming releases, a wonderful benefit they're playing soon, and influences ranging from Rocket From the Crypt to Fugazi to Screeching Weasel. The entire interview is included below. (Also, James mentioned his buddy does a podcast called Rocket Fuel. We had time to check it out, and it's worth the time. Go here.)

Sp please, check this one out, dig the Anchor Arms tunes along with the rest of the set, support these bands if you feel inclined to do so, and we'll check back in with you next week.

Episode Fourteen: Freeplay

Every couple goes through trouble. Case in point: Sam and I are tired of each other. We have trouble reconciling our differences and compromising our broadcasting ideals for our no-doubt, sometime-in-the-future Marconi-nominated show. Well, rather than dissolve our DJ duo marriage, we've invoked the gods of creativity and come up with a classic concept for this week's show: Play whatever the Hell we want. This week, we're not slaves to any format or theme, just good music that we want to jam for you and with you.

We hope the start of your holiday season has been safe and productive. Now's as good a time as any to get out there and support the artists--they are our lifeline. Enjoy the new, old, and favorites this week!

Episode Thirteen: Songs We Love By Artists We Hate

We Two Dudes think you know the feeling: You hear a song; you enjoy the song; but the band, eh, they're just not cutting it for you. For everybody that has ever given into the sole reason they will ever pay attention to a bummer band, this show's for you. Two Dudes presents an episode filled with songs we like from bands we don't particularly care for.

So we celebrate the age of online digital retailers who offer us one song or one album. We've bought the song, downloaded it, and here it is for you to listen to. Enjoy it one song at a time, support the artists (even if it's one song at a time), and we'll see you next week.

Episode Twelve: The Education of Two Dudes

We had an idea what our audience was thinking by the time we got to our dozenth show: Where did Two Dudes come from? What formed them? Is this overwhelming mass of musical knowledge for real? Well, the answer is yes to all three questions, and today's episode will explain why. Two Dudes presents to you an autobiographical affair, with songs that define eras, drum up painful memories, cause paranoia, and everything in between. This show, for the Two Dudes audience, will be similar to reading Dylan's Chronicles, Volume 1: it all finally falls into place, and the picture is clearer yet more elusive than before (and it's in the ultimate bargain bin: the internet!).

Though most of these artists need it much less than musicians we usually play, please support them all (even if it's just through your viewership of their Behind the Music).

Here's what our lives sound like:

Intro) High Fidelity clip/Ted Leo "Biomusicology"
1) Bruce Springsteen "Born in the U.S.A."

Episode Ten: Death by Two Dudes

OK, so we made it to ten episodes. In honor of this, it being Halloween today, and Sam and I feeling festive as all get-out, we're posting this episode with a new press photo of us. You'll notice it above, as it is a clear homage to a great American songwriter and his one-time sidekick.

To also commemorate Halloween, we present to you a show based on death. Some of our favorite artists singing about our inevitable demise. What better way to contemplate 'what happens next' than hearing The Kinks wax post mortem or a Neko Case ghostly lullaby? I don't know. Interspersed through the set are sections from George Carlin's bit, "Death and Dying," and Nick Sawrdson's bit, "Dying." Support the artists, be safe in your trick-or-treating, and don't eat too much corn on macabre. Heh.

Episode Nine: Around the World, Part 1

Ever feel like expanding your musical horizons? If you feel insufficient in this way, Two Dudes Radio may very well be your beacon of hope. Sam and I are dedicating a special series we're calling "Around the World" to exploring the globe, finding artists from each country, and representing them with a hand-picked song from your amateur hosts. This week we hit a handful of "obvious" selections but also throw in a few jams you may not have heard yet. As the list of countries thins, we're probably all going to get educated more than we know. We hope you enjoy the set, and please support the artists as you see fit.

Episode Five: Shut Up

Today we present to you our instrumental show. The sole criterion for the show is simple: no lyrics or vocal accompaniment to this music. You get a little drum n' bass, a little metal, a whole lotta jazz, and some other stuff thrown in. To be honest, upon listening to this episode, I must say it's a clear frontrunner for my favorite musical show yet. We'll see what Sam thinks of it when he gets back from Austin (if you attended the Monotonix show at Emo's last night, Sam was the one in the back pretending it was his 18th birthday). On that note, keep supporting the artists, keep listening to Two Dudes, and keep it real. Here are your tracks:
